About Our Club
Our Club has been active since its formation in 1984 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Camberwell. We began as a mens only club but always had a strong history of involving women in as many ways as possible. In 2009 the Club was opened to women membership and we now have 60% female participation in our activities with three women having served as presidents. The Club started with 34 members and now has 85, our Standing Resolutions limiting us to a maximum of 100. Members older than 90 are counted separately under our Standing Resolutions and of these there are 7 including 3 who now find it impossible to participate in our activities, but they continue to receive our regular newsletter and any other bulletins we issue to members, mostly in the form of emails. We make an effort to acknowledge those with health difficulties through phone calls and cards.
As a glance along the menu bar will indicate, we are active with regular walks, monthly outings (day long events, usually with the convenience of a bus to get us about), and tours which can both be Australia-wide or international. If you watch the rotating gallery on our home page you get a very good image of the places we’ve been over the past ten years or so. We also have theatre afternoons, at both the Malvern Theatre and musicals staged at the Whitehorse Theatre, Nunawading. And of course we have a regular monthly meeting with an excellent morning tea and a chance to chat, with a guest speaker to entertain members in the second half. Attendance at our Club meetings is completely free. It has now become common for many members to congregate at a local cafe after the meeting to continue the good spirits of the day.
Attendances at all our events are good. We average between 65 and 75 at our regular Club meetings, our walks regularly attract 10 participants or more, and our Outings average between 40 and 50 attendances consistently. Tours are popular with participation in the range of 25-35. It’s a very friendly club which you will find if you come and visit us.
We meet monthly at the Camberwell Central Bowls Club at 10am (14 Bowen St, Camberwell. There is no charge. The Bowls Club can be easily accessed by car from Camberwell or Toorak Roads with ample parking on both sides of Bowen Street with overflow parking in the Salvation Army paddock and area. If coming by tram, use Tram Route 75. Bowen Street is at stop 45. See map below.
In March we have our Annual General Meeting and in December our annual Christmas Dinner to close the Probus Year. These are often held at local Clubhouses such as Kew Golf Club or Box Hill Golf Club. Members are charged for attendance at these two meetings.
Our club recognizes the generous support of the City of Boroondara Council which, through the Community Grant program, provides financial support toward our Club projects. We also thank Bendigo Bank which has been generous in its support for our Club.
